About The Artist
Michael Azgour (b. 1979, California) is a San Francisco–based contemporary painter whose work investigates the space between perception and reality. With an MFA in Studio Painting from the Academy of Art University, San Francisco and a BA in Psychology from the University of California, San Diego, Azgour crafts layered compositions where figuration and abstraction coexist, inviting viewers to contemplate how memory, image and technology shape our experience of the world.
Inspired by the digital age’s collision of captured snapshots and painterly tradition, his paintings use pattern, repetition and distortion to reflect on change, identity and the act of seeing. Exhibited internationally across the United States, Europe and Asia, his work features in public and private collections including the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford University.
Azgour has produced a commissioned collection for Twr y Felin Hotel, comprising three pieces that tell a narrative in his recognisable style. Drawing inspiration from St Davids, the works focus on the coastal area of Whitesands, capturing its landscapes, swimmers, and surfers. A significant source of inspiration came from photographs by Marcus Oleniuk for the Pebidiog book project, which documents life in St Davids, providing a vivid foundation for Azgour’s layered, story-driven compositions.
