How did you get into surfing?

Surfing is my passion, and I’ve been competing for both the junior and senior Welsh squads over the past three years. I started surfing four years ago due to the inability to train indoors for gymnastics because of covid.  I trained in gymnastics since I was two and was lucky enough to have a very successful career, where I also represented Wales.  It was soon clear to me that surfing was something that would take over and become my key sport. My long-term goal is to represent Great Britain in surfing, and I’m working hard to make this dream a reality.

What does it involve?

Surfing at a high level requires dedication and lots of time. I train several times a week, either at competitions, in the sea, or through gym sessions to improve my strength, endurance, and flexibility. The skills needed to succeed include physical endurance, balance, and mental focus, as well as learning how to read the ocean and adapt to different wave conditions.

What are your goals?

Short-term goals: Next year, my aim is to place on the podium at a UK surf competition, as my best ranking so far has been 5th place. I also hope to qualify for the Welsh Senior Team for the European Championships in July.

Long-term goals: My ultimate aspiration is to compete professionally and represent Great Britain in surfing at the international level.

How will this sponsorship support you?

Attending Llewellyn Whittacker’s surf camp would be a huge step towards achieving my goals. It will allow me to train intensively, learning new techniques, improving my physical and mental preparation, and practicing on world-class waves. This opportunity would help me progress faster by focusing on my weaknesses and getting high-level coaching. It will also better prepare me for competitions like the British Championships and Welsh Junior Championships in the coming year.

Timeline for upcoming events

  • October 12th-13th: British Championships, Jersey
  • November 9th: The Wave, Bristol
  • January: Surf training camp, Morocco
  • April: Welsh Junior Championships and Wilkinson Sword Cup
  • July: Potential selection for Welsh Senior Team (European Championships)
  • August: Boardmasters, Newquay, Cornwall
I have regular ad-hoc coaching sessions with Phil Sadler, the Welsh team coach, and I attend The Wave in Bristol, where surfers can fine-tune their skills. However, the camp would offer a more immersive experience with consistent waves, which is harder to find in the UK.
