Reading, Poetry & Book Launch with Patrick Nash & Ifor Thomas
December 12, 2024 - 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
An evening of reading, poetry and a book launch with local writers Patrick Nash and Ifor Thomas
Launch of Shots Across the Water by Patrick Nash
Aged 22, Patrick left his parents’ home with a small rucksack, two UK passports and £250 in cash. Ten months later he returned, having walked and hitchhiked on an extraordinary and often dangerous trip from Israel to Egypt, south through Sudan and Uganda to Kenya, then through Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo), Central African Republic, Cameroon, Nigeria, Niger and back north across the Sahara Desert through Algeria and Morocco.
Along the way Patrick experienced sandstorms, famine, drought, a refugee crisis, a military coup, imprisonment, illness and was shot at by angry border guards. The resulting book is part travelogue, part adventure story, part cultural history and part self-reflection.
His first book, Creating Social Enterprise, has received great reviews.
“I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It’s an easy read which tells a fascinating saga of a lifetime of endeavour” Ian Garner, Yorkshire Times
Ifor Thomas
Ifor is a poet and short story writer. He has won a number of awards including John Tripp Award for Spoken Poetry, Welsh Book of the Year, Cardiff International Poetry Competition and British Airways Travel Writer of the Year.
Ifor will start the evening by reading some of his poetry and will then interview Patrick about his new book.
“Ifor’s is the kind of poetic voice we need in these loud times. Listen to it. Listen to it now.” – Ian MacMillan
