About Artist & Art Details

Amanda has always stitched. She is trained in ceramics at Bristol but continued to stitch and her ceramics were like decorative textiles. Surface pattern was her main focus on the MA and then she concentrated solely on textiles. Amanda specifically works as a hand-stitched embroiderer using coloured yarns on canvas backing. The stitches are limited to chain and back stitch and worked closely together so they form the background and foreground. Influences have always come from her own experiences and evolved over time. She has been making work for 30 years and has constantly exhibited during that time and engaged with some wonderful commissions, Roch Castle and St Davids Cathedral, to mention a few.

Amanda’s style and personal approach remain constant but are applied to an ever-changing love of exploring new images, ideas, and compositions. Inspiration has been found through travel, motherhood, teaching and, much more recently, the natural world. Having moved to Pembrokeshire with her potter husband, they have set up a small gallery where they now work, Goat Street Gallery here in St Davids, and her images now have a lot to do with life in St Davids. Slightly naive observations of buildings, fish, birds feeding, watching, pairing up, standing around, day-to-day familiar glimpses that are sometimes humorous and a joy to behold.
